Stories from the past unearthed in debut EP from Old Moll

Bristol-based indie folk artist Old Moll releases her debut EP, ‘Mothers of Mothers’, which explores women’s stories from folklore and history.
The songs on the Mothers of Mothers tell the stories of women from the wild windy heights of Dartmoor to the Neolithic Mediterranean, including inspirations from Moll’s own family history.
The EP, recorded at home in Bristol with her band, includes singles ‘Venus of Malta’, a shimmering indie track about a 5000-year-old statue, and ‘Silver Hare’, a dark tale based on a shapeshifting witch from Dartmoor folklore.
Mothers of Mothers includes a brand-new version of Moll’s debut single ‘Winter in the Summer Country’, originally released as an acoustic track in 2023.
‘It all started when I did some research into my maternal family tree,’ explains Moll.
‘I discovered the lives of my maternal ancestors, most of whom juggled jobs as servants as well as domestic labour and raising children. I was instantly overwhelmed by the pressure they must have been under, and the unseen labour that continues for mothers today.’
‘Winter in the Summer Country’, and all the songs on the EP, are for the women from history whose stories and labour are buried.’
Mothers of Mothers is available on 30th July on streaming platforms, and via digital download and CD on Bandcamp.
About Old Moll
Named after a legendary witch from Dartmoor, Old Moll catches stories and folklore that fell through the cracks of history, using them to examine urgent issues in our society. Audiences are invited to ask themselves the hardest questions in the softest ways through strange new stories: what a standing stone would say to a billionaire, or what’s hidden inside the last acorn on Earth.
Starting as a solo acoustic project, Moll released her debut single ‘Winter in the Summer Country’ in 2023, followed by ‘Second Sleep’ and Welsh language song ‘Môr Hafren’ in 2024.
Moll’s sound drifts from dark, smoky folk to bright, heady indie, tied together with ethereal, searching vocals. Old Moll has been captivating audiences across Bristol and South Wales and transporting them to other realms, whether it be Neolithic grandeur or the mysteries of medieval sleep.
Old Moll is now joined onstage by Will Palmer on bass, George Turner on keys, Osh Carroll on drums and Ben Veale on guitar, forming a charismatic 5-piece: and has played extensively on both sides of the Severn including Bristol stalwart venues Louisiana and Exchange, Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach and Swansea Arena.
